CPAP Machines
  Home CPAP

Unlike APAP, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines require the patient's optimum pressure setting to be entered and set into the machine. For this reason, you can only order a CPAP machine if you know the air pressure settings as determined by a clinical titration (often an overnight sleep study). Settings are expressed as a number between 4 and 20 cm H2O.

CPAP Features and Options

All CPAP machines do their main job very well. They deliver air to act as a splint to keep the airways open and prevent obstructions. This way you are free to breathe without apnoea events.

Different CPAP manufacturers have come up with different, innovative features to add to the CPAP experience. Ranging from automatic humidification adjustment, exhalation pressure relief, performance logging and reporting, leak compensation and automatic altitude adjustment to built-in batteries and compact size, there is a CPAP machine with specifications to suit anybody. Some of those features are briefly explained below:

  • The DeVilbiss SleepCube is the quietest CPAP machine we have come across over the years. Its compact shapes, light weight, 12V DC option and clever auto-switching power supply make it a perfect travel companion. The optional humidifier is dishwasher-proof too.
  • The Fisher & Paykel SleepStyle 604 features ThermoSmart Technology which enables this CPAP to constantly deliver optimal humidification by monitoring surrounding room temperature and adjusting the humidity levels accordingly. This avoids condensation and rain-out, adding a great level of comfort.
  • The Probasics Zzz-PAP is such a remarkably small CPAP, it is a great choice for those with little space in the bedroom and of course, for travelers. Not only the size but costs have been reduced as well, making this a very affordable solution, great as a second machine for trips abroad.
  • VIASYS' BreatheX Journey CPAP has a built-in battery providing enough juice to last you through the night. This removes the need for an electrical socket near the bed and it is small enough to take into bed with you. This portable CPAP is a favourite among frequent flyers as they don't have to worry about the airplane's electrical options.
  • The AEIOMed EveRest 2 is a great example of integrated design features. Its modular concept allows you to add a humidifier and battery right away or later, and they all slot into one great piece of equipment. With the LCD at the front instead of on top, you don't have to get up to read the display either. Now that's good thinking.
  • Most machines come with some form of altitude compensation. Because of the difference in air pressure at different altitudes, you need to be able to adjust the machine accordingly when you visit a place high up in the mountains. The SleepStyle 323 and 604 allow you to pick your current altitude and the CPAP machine will do the maths for you. The EveRest 2 and SleepCube detect it automatically, all on their own.

Full details of each CPAP machine is provided on their respective pages along with a more in-depth explanation of each feature and how you benefit from it.
