ICON – Reinventing the CPAP machine

The Fisher & Paykel ICON Premo CPAP Machine is redefining what a CPAP machine is. Gone are the typical hospital-style designs, replaced with a modern, stylish design. No need to find room for it along with your alarm clock on your bedside table – it has a built in alarm clock which can play your favourite songs to wake you up. And there's no need to worry about finding room for a humidifier as it comes built in – despite still being the size of a standalone CPAP machine. Fisher & Paykel started the ICON with a blank sheet of paper, and the result is a revolutionary and very intelligent design.

The design of the ICON Premo will be the first thing you'll notice. The compact unit is housed in a stylish, modern design in a sleek grey with chrome touches. It's a far cry from the unsightly designs of many CPAP machines. No longer does your CPAP have to look like medical equipment – it just functions like it. Having a built-in alarm clock adds a further departure from convention – there's no need to try and find room for two appliances next to your bed any more. As well as having regular alarm bleeps, you can also add songs from your computer and wake up to your favourite music instead.

Built-in humidification – no extra space required

Fisher & Paykel have built a reputation of making excellent humidified CPAP machines, but you'd be forgiven for thinking they've abandoned that apparoach with the ICON – but they haven't. In terms of size, the ICON Premo is similar to most other CPAP machines; the difference is the ICON houses a humidifier inside, whereas most need a humidifier added on – requiring more space. The ICON's internal engineering allows you to have the benefits of a humidifier, but the footprint of a regular CPAP. Those who have used humidifiers before will be pleased to know that they can continue to avoid cold air and waking with a dry mouth, without the space requirements, and additional expense, of adding an external humidifier.

Thermosmart prevents humidification drawbacks

Those who have used humidification before will know that for all its benefits, it is not without its drawbacks also. Because the air contains warm moisture, when it touches the cold tubing it condenses, leaving water in the pipe and in your mask. This can also cause loud gargling noises as the air passes through a pool of water that has built up in the pipe. The ICON Premo though has heated tubing, eliminating condensation and ensuring the air is still as warm and moisturising when it reaches your mask as it was when leaving the machine. So now you get all the benefits of humidification, with none of the drawbacks.

ICON Premo or ICON Novo?

The main differences are that the Premo has automatic altitude compensation and leak adjustment, as well as more advanced compliance reporting. Both have the built-in humidifier and alarm clock, ThermoSmart heated tubing and proportional ramp.
