ICON+ - redefining what a CPAP machine is
Fisher & Paykel's ICON+ Auto CPAP Machine redefines what a CPAP is and does. No longer is it an awkward, unsightly piece of medical equipment by the side of your bed; now its a modern, multi-functional equipment that just so happens to offer excellent therapy. It's intelligent design means that rather than taking up space on your bedside table, it saves it. With a built-in alarm clock and humidifier, it is the complete CPAP therapy unit - and all in a compact package with a stylish, contemporary design.
The first thing you'll notice about the ICON+ is its eye-catching design. Sleek, modern and minimal, its a design that will easily fit into your bedroom. No longer is your CPAP machine an eye-sore! The built-in alarm clock means there's no need to have two electrical items fighting for space, you have both in one small unit. Rather than waking up to annoying bleeping, you can have the ICON+ play some of your favourite songs to wake you up instead. You simply put the songs onto the USB memory stick provided and then use a song as your wake-up call.
Built-in humidification
One thing you may not spot instantly though is that the ICON+ has a built-in humidifier, which may be hard to believe judging by its size. This allows for more comfortable therapy; no more cold air, no more waking up with a dry mouth. For those used to having the humidifier added separately will be particularly appreciative of its design, saving the trouble of finding more space for the humidifier to sit in as well. All the benefits of humidification, with the negative aspects of an additional outlay and the increased footprint.
Thermosmart prevents humidification drawbacks
Those who have used humidification before will know that for all its benefits, it is not without its drawbacks also. Because the air contains warm moisture, when it touches the cold tubing it condenses, leaving water in the pipe and in your mask. This can also cause loud gargling noises as the air passes through a pool of water that has built up in the pipe. The ICON+ though has heated tubing, eliminating condensation and ensuring the air is still as warm and moisturising when it reaches your mask as it was when leaving the machine. So now you get all the benefits of humidification, with none of the drawbacks.
Non-UK customers please note: This machine comes with a fixed UK three-pin plug. You will need an adapter to use this with European mains sockets. Intus do not supply these but they are readily available from electrical stores.

Move from CPAP to APAP Review by Steve AllanQuality Website Information Comfort Ease of Use Value The move from CPAP to APAP has been difficult as I keep thinking the machine has stopped due to the sensawake function, as I am a light sleeper it does feel as if it keeps going off. Time will tell if this works for me.(Posted on 30 June 2017)
Excellent machine Review by SymmitValue Website Information Quality Comfort Ease of Use F&P Icon Auto Review.(Posted on 29 January 2012)
I've had this machine a couple of weeks now, moving from a Hoffrichter Trend II (which is now my "portable" rig) which I've been using for a year.
Design and appearance:
The Icon is a nice machine to have next to the bed, it really does look like a large alarm clock rather than a piece of medical equipment. The blower and humidifier are integrated into one unit which has a very small footprint on your bedside cabinet Power supply is built in and the lead is not detachable so if you're travelling with it you'll need extensions and adaptors. The humidifier chamber is big and dishwasher safe. Access is through a twist on lid that can be quite stiff to open.
Operation:
Operation is through a twist and press menu system and is pretty easy to get used to if you can use an iPod. If all you need to do is turn it on and off then you never need to access the menus, just press for on, hold for ramp, press again for off. USer menus allow access to the humidifier settings and reports for the last night, 7 nights and 30 nights usage. Intially the rig had a very "chemical plastic" smell which took a few nights to go away, I guess from the hose.
Noise:
This machine is noisier than my Hoffrichter, exacerbated by the slightly resonant hose. Adding a hose cover has quietened it a lot, but it's definitely noisier at the same pressure. It's not obtrusive and I'll report back later as I'm going to put it on a rubber mat to isolate it from the cabinet and see if that helps.
Comfort:
The humidifier has 3 boost settings and 7 heat settings, and is very powerful. F&P have a reputation for the best humidifiers and I've no reason to doubt it. It certainly consumes a lot of water having about 50% more capacity than my old machine. The heated hose delivers warm air which is very pleasant and I've had no "rain out" condensation at all, despite some cold nights. There's no EPR or Flex modes however the machine detects when you awaken or arouse durng the night (sensawake) and lowers the pressure, when you wake up in the morning it's hard to tell it's running.
User info:
Full AHI and pressure reporting is available from the front panel which is great.
Detailed info:
The F&P software is hard to obtain and quite tricky to install but the convenience of being able to take the custom USB stick from the machine to your clinic (or your own PC if you have the software) is great. Reporting from the software is brilliant, showing graphs for the last 14 days for full therapy details and individual days also, and allowing the setting of the machine from the software.
Conclusions:
Great machine, probably about the most expensive on the market but if you like / need humidity and heat it's worth it. Seems popular with the NHS now too so a lot of lucky users out there gettng them. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it as it's all things to all people whether they want fixed or auto, and the sensawake makes up for the lack of flex. The heat and humidity is brilliant.
Fully featured, simple to use and effective Review by Neil in DublinValue Website Information Quality Comfort Ease of Use I have had this machine for a few weeks. This is my first time using a cpap, but this machine is a dream. It is easy to use and takes up so little space. My wife is a very light sleeper and I was worried about any noise. No issues here the machine is so silent. The built in humidifier works well and I use this with an oral mask which I find less claustrohobic than a full face as I breath through my mouth. Had my first good sleep in years last week!,(Posted on 1 October 2011)
