Provent Therapy is a simple, non-invasive treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The Provent Nasal Device uses a valve design that attaches over the nostrils and is secured in place with hypoallergenic adhesive. The valve opens and closes, redirecting air through small holes to create resistance when breathing out. Because Provent Therapy is a small, single use, disposable device, it’s also discreet and very convenient.

This Starter Kit is intended for those looking to use Provent for the first time. If you already use Provent, then you can find the regular monthly Provent packs here.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Provent is a prescription-only product. Therefore, please download this form and have your doctor, consultant or clinician complete it (it should take them under one minute). When you have this form completed, you can place your order. You will receive an email requesting the completed form shortly after ordering, and you can simply reply with the form scanned and attached. We cannot dispatch your order until this has been returned. If you have any questions, please Contact Us.

During inhalation, the valve opens, allowing the user to breathe in freely. When exhaling, the valve closes and air passing through the nose is directed through two small air channels. This increases the pressure in the airway (called EPAP or expiratory positive airway pressure), maintains pressure and helps to keep the airway open until the start of the next inhalation.

Provent is primarily intended for those with Mild and Moderate OSA, who have tried CPAP and are finding it difficult to maintain compliance (i.e. use regularly). In terms of the effectiveness of the treatment, CPAP remains the “gold standard” - but if a patient is unable to use it every night, then Provent is available as an alternative treatment option.

While CPAP increases the pressure on both inhalation and exhalation; Provent Therapy increases the pressure on exhalation only. CPAP increases pressure in the airway using forced air, while Provent Therapy uses the patient’s own breathing to create pressure during exhalation. Because the pressure created through Provent is not strong as CPAP can achieve, it is only suitable for Mild and Moderate Sleep Apnoea. It simply cannot create enough pressure for Severe OSA, for which CPAP remains the only proven treatment option.

Provent is also useful for short-term use while travelling, thanks to its small, simple design. Each night’s set is individually pouched. There is no need for electricity or equipment, and the device is discarded after single-use.

Can Provent Therapy replace my CPAP machine?

If you have mild or moderate OSA and are not able to use your CPAP machine regularly, then your consultant may agree that an alternative treatment method should be tried.

With their approval, you would be able to purchase Provent Therapy Packs. Provent cannot be used at the same time as CPAP.

Can I get Provent through the NHS?

Currently, Provent Therapy is only available to purchase privately. However, you will need your consultant’s approval if you intend to switch from an NHS-provided CPAP machineto Provent therapy.

Can Provent be used if I breathe orally?

For Provent to work effectively, the patient must breathe nasally. Should this not be the case, then the use of a chin strap may be sufficient for prevent oral breathing. However, if nasal breathing is prohibited, for example due to a deviated septum, then Provent would not be suitable.

How long is the adaptation period?

Much like CPAP, the different sensation of pressure created by Provent can take a few nights to get used to. The Starter Kit includes some devices with reduced resistance, allowing you to adjust more easily before moving onto the standard devices with the full level of resistance.

Will Provent Therapy work for me?

As with any medical treatment, Provent Therapy will not work for everyone. However, the success rates are high, with recent clinical studies finding that 81% of OSA patients were successfully treated. Discussions with your consultant will help determine if Provent is right for you. Thanks to the disposable nature of Provent devices, the upfront cost to start Provent is significantly less than most treatment options. For example, a Provent Starter Kit costs around 15% of a CPAP kit.

Is Provent Therapy safe?

Yes, Provent Therapy can be used safely. In recent clinical studies, no severe, device-related adverse events were reported. However, there are some health conditions which would make Provent unsafe; these include severe heart disease (including heart failure), pathologically low blood pressure, and severe breathing disorders. Please see CPAP.co.uk/provent for more information. Always discuss the suitability of Provent with your consultant prior to beginning treatment.

How much does Provent cost?

Provent devices are sold in monthly packs of 30 devices. You can either purchase a Starter Kit, which includes four nights of reduced resistance to allow acclimatisation with the remaining 26 being full resistance, or a full pack of 30 full resistance devices. Both Kits are priced at £109 per pack when purchased individually, with the full packs being available on a monthly subscription of £89. This works out at under £3 per night; for many this is a fair price for a good night’s sleep if CPAP is not effectively treating OSA.
